Ear Surgery

There are a wide variety of ear surgeries. Tympanoplasty is the repair of the eardrum and middle ear. Mastoidectomy is done for certain types of chronic infections and a condition known as cholesteatoma. Cholesteatoma is a skin cyst within the structures of the eardrum, middle ear, and/or mastoid bone. This condition can cause deterioration of hearing and infection of the ear and surrounding tissue such as the brain. Stapedectomy is a procedure to repair the third hearing bone called the stapes (stirrup). Most of these can be done as outpatient surgery.

Myringotomy Tubes (Ear Tubes)

This is done as outpatient surgery to assist the ear in ventilating itself. A small opening is created in the eardrum and a plastic tube is inserted in that opening. This surgery is performed with a microscope. The tubes are temporary and fall out after some period of time. FOllow up is very important.
